Stephen Prutsman

Hailed as "One of the finest American pianists of his generation," Stephen Prutsman is one of the most versatile and brilliant pianists of today. Active as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, composer and conductor, Prutsman's artistry has been acclaimed by critics and audiences worldwide.

Prutsman's solo engagements have included appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Baltimore, Minnesota, Detroit, Seattle, Houston and Dallas Symphony Orchestras. Overseas, he has made numerous appearances with such orchestras as the Belgian National Orchestra, the Flanders Philharmonic, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, the Bremen Chamber Orchestra, and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. As a recitalist, he has performed in prestigious music centers in NYC, Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston, Santiago de Chile, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Switzerland, Moscow, and Tokyo. A frequent guest at the Marlboro Music Festival and Spoleto USA, Prutsman regularly collaborates with many of the world's great instrumentalists and has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. This season, he had the additional honor of performing at The White House for President Bush and guests with Dawn Upshaw.

Prutsman first won international recognition as a medalist at the 1990 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, where he received special awards for his performance of Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev. The following year he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and received a medal in the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition.

An involvement in creating new musical environments outside the major cultural centers is reflected in Stephen Prutsman's past work as Artistic Consultant to the American Pianists Association (of which he is a former fellow), the formation of "A Festival of Music" on the island of Guam, and in 1991, the founding of an International Chamber Music Festival in El Paso, Texas, where he currently serves as Festival Director. Stephen Prutsman makes his home in San Francisco.
